The sculpture pictured on my home page, by Canadian artist Eldon Garnet, is one of my favourite works of art in the city where I live: Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is entitled Equal Before the Law / Égalité devant la loi.
The sculpture sits outside Osgoode Hall, which is the building that houses the Ontario Court of Appeal. It depicts a lion and a lamb, evenly balanced on a scale. The pedestal reproduces in full section 15(1) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which states:
"Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability."
I love how the artist captured visually the legal concept of constitutionally-protected equality, and am very pleased to share this special piece of Toronto art on this forum.
